We're making the WebView open-source as part of Avalonia 12. Let's talk about why.
Why make it FOSS?
If you've been following Avalonia, you'll know the WebView has been one of the flagship controls in Accelerate, our commercial offering. It uses native platform web rendering rather than bundling Chromium, which keeps your app lean and fast. It's a control we're genuinely proud of.
But embedding web content into applications isn't a niche requirement anymore. OAuth flows, documentation rendering, rich content display, it's become table stakes. And when something becomes table stakes, gating it behind a commercial licence starts to feel like the wrong decision.
So we're making it FOSS.
What This Means for Accelerate Customers
Nothing dramatic. Accelerate continues to grow and we've several additioanl things in the pipeline that we think you'll love. The advanced tooling, components, and support it provides remain genuinely compelling for teams building serious applications. We're moving one control from one side of the line to the other, but the rest of the offering continues to provide incredible value.
If you're an existing Accelerate subscriber using the WebView today, nothing changes for you in terms of support. We'll continue to support you directly on any issues, exactly as before.
When Can You Get It?
The open-source WebView will land in an upcoming Avalonia 12 pre-release, and it will be included when 12 hits stable. We'll share exact timing as we get closer.
Stay tuned as Avalonia 12 takes shape.
