Side gigs

At Avalonia UI, we value genuine enthusiasm and a deep love for technology in our team members. We often find this quality in individuals who pursue personal projects outside of work; whether it's contributing to open source software, maintaining a technical blog, or exploring innovative solutions to interesting problems.

We recognise and support that some personal projects may generate additional income. Whilst we encourage these entrepreneurial pursuits, it's essential that your role at Avalonia UI remains your primary professional focus. Our company's success depends on having a fully engaged team that brings their best energy and creativity to our mission.

For this reason, all positions at Avalonia UI are full-time commitments. Whilst we support your personal projects, they should complement – not compete with – your work here. We're building something special together, and that requires your primary professional dedication to be directed toward Avalonia's success.

Managing Time with Personal Projects

When evaluating the appropriateness of a side project, we consider its impact on your work at Avalonia UI and the time commitment involved.

A modest time investment—such as a few hours per month on paid work outside Avalonia—is generally acceptable. Personal projects should be pursued in your own time and must not affect your performance or responsibilities at Avalonia UI.

We understand that some team members may aspire to develop their side projects into full-time ventures. We welcome open dialogue about such aspirations—please share these plans with us so we can work together constructively. Our goal is to support your long-term professional development whilst ensuring alignment with our needs, regardless of whether your ultimate path lies with us or elsewhere.

Above all, side projects (paid or unpaid) are welcome as long as you continue to excel in your role and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Whilst we support these pursuits, we believe this balance is only sustainable when side projects remain a minor commitment of your time and energy.

Intellectual Property

To be clear: Avalonia UI makes no claim to intellectual property (IP) you create in your personal time, such as contributions to other open source projects. However, you must exercise great care not to incorporate any of Avalonia UI's proprietary IP into your personal projects, as this can create significant legal complications.

Only Avalonia's explicitly MIT-licensed materials may be used in external projects. If you have any concerns about IP matters, particularly regarding projects that may compete with Avalonia's current offerings or planned developments, please consult with Steven for guidance on the best approach.

Getting Approval

We ask that you check with Steven to obtain approval before undertaking any side projects. This ensures clarity and alignment for all parties involved.

If you had existing side projects before joining Avalonia UI, these should be disclosed and discussed during your onboarding process.
