Why does Avalonia UI exist?

Our Mission

Empower .NET developers to create exceptional cross-platform applications.

Our Strategy

1. Equip developers with the tools to succeed

Building high-quality, cross-platform applications is complex, especially without the right tools.

Our mission is to simplify this process by providing a robust, open-source UI toolkit that enables developers to create consistent, beautiful, and high-performing applications for every platform. We focus on enhancing productivity and innovation, ensuring developers can meet their users’ expectations effortlessly.

2. Make Avalonia the first choice for developers

We aim to be developers’ trusted companion from their first app prototype to their most ambitious product launches.

To achieve this, we deliver best-in-class documentation, intuitive APIs, and enterprise-grade support options. We offer a supportive community, a transparent open-source model, and Pro features designed to scale seamlessly with our customers’ needs, from hobbyist projects to enterprise-level deployments.

3. Simplify development with a unified, reliable platform

As companies grow, they often face fragmented workflows and inconsistent tooling. Avalonia eliminates this friction by delivering a single source of truth for application UI development.

Through our open-source core and Avalonia Accelerate features, we enable teams to: • Achieve more by reducing complexity in UI development. • Maintain confidence in consistent, high-quality performance across platforms. • Scale their applications with a dependable foundation that grows with their ambitions.

A bit of background

Avalonia UI is a technology company specialising in application development frameworks. Our mission is to enable enterprises to build applications for all major platforms using Microsoft's .NET. We enable companies, including GitHub, Datadog, AMD, JetBrains, Unity Games, Schneider Electric, Canon, Air France KLM, and Moody's Analytics, to reduce the costs and risks of building complex applications for multiple platforms.

Following the successful open-core business model pioneered by industry leaders like Qt, our strategy centres around Avalonia, our open-source foundation. This model allows us to build a robust enterprise business while fostering a thriving developer community. By maintaining an open-source core, we ensure rapid innovation, broad adoption, and community trust, while generating revenue through premium enterprise features and services.

Our flagship project, Avalonia, is transforming the .NET developer ecosystem by enabling the creation of complex, cross-platform applications for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and the Browser from a single project. It powers over 240k projects worldwide, with more than 90 million builds in 2024. It's been in development for over a decade, with over 450 contributors helping make it what it is today. It is the foundational element of all our offerings and powers our first product, Avalonia XPF.

We introduced Avalonia XPF in 2023, our debut commercial product, which addresses the needs of businesses that are stuck with mission-critical applications developed using Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). Instead of expensive and protracted application rewrites, developers can migrate effortlessly to new platforms within a few hours. Large enterprises have shown significant interest in adopting Avalonia XPF, having worked with companies including Tesla, Boeing, Texas Instruments, BAE Systems and more.

Our strength today lies in desktop and embedded application development solutions. There is sustained demand and a reliable market for experienced desktop and embedded developers, with plenty of commercial opportunities. Both WPF and WinForms see modest (but steady) year-on-year growth of up to 3%, while Avalonia sees double digit growth throughout 2024.

We compete in a niche sector, and we're vying for a leadership position. We are poised to step in and address the gap created by Microsoft's shift in focus towards Cloud and AI, allowing us to take the lead in client-side development.

History of Avalonia UI

Our foundational project is open-source technology, created in 2013. The company AvaloniaUI OÜ was founded in late 2019 by those responsible for the significant development of the project in response to the demand from enterprises like Unity Games and Outsystems to have developer support. The company initially existed as a service-based business but begun pivoting to a products business in 2023, with the release of Avalonia XPF. The ultimate goal is to generate 90% of the companys revenue from products, with services accounting for the remaining ~10% of our revenue.
